Preview 07: Defying the One-Dimensional Brand

In this preview, I share a glimpse into who I am: a mom, a creator, a former city dweller, and someone who refuses to shrink into a single category. My hope is to encourage you to stop curating yourself so tightly and start living as the multifaceted person you already are.

This is a preview of The Refined Life, your guide to mastering the art of minimalist luxury.

So far, I've shared the history of The Refined Life philosophy, at least given you a sneak peek into that. I shared how I became a podcaster, which was not on my bingo card, but here I am. But I also want to share a little bit about me.

I do like my privacy, especially now that I have a kiddo. I want him to have the life that he wants and not be haunted by whatever I post about him online. So I tried to keep everything about him as private as possible. Um, but it's interesting now, this phase of life, having a young child, after having a career, after living in the city and being that cosmopolitan girl. Now I'm a suburban mom, something I never thought I would describe myself as. But what I'm learning is you can always forge your own path. Now I live just outside of Washington DC, but I live out here in the suburbs on my own terms.

I still love all of the things that I loved before the move out here. And you'll find that there's a range. I'm a bit all over the place. But I think that makes life fun and exciting. So you'll notice, for example, I'll post fine art, but the background music will be hip hop or hip hop inspired. I feel that our current culture is demanding that we become a brand that's focused. Our personal brand should be so focused that we have to cut out parts of ourselves. Am I the only one who feels this way? I'm living in defiance of that idea, honestly. We're all multifaceted. We're all complex.

So I want to give part of myself through this podcast so you have a better understanding of who I am. And I just want to encourage anyone listening to be everything that you are. It doesn't have to be a perfectly crafted, perfectly curated representation of yourself. And I know we talk a lot about that in terms of optics and presenting ourselves a certain way. But this is how we do it on a secondary level. We don't put forth things that might not seem aligned to who society thinks we are. Like you secretly like bad action movies. You know what? It's okay. I say bring it all to the forefront.

That is part of what I try to present on The Refined Life blog, and I will continue to share here on the podcast. It's okay to be incongruent. It's okay to be multifaceted. Bring all of those elements to everything you do every day, and it will be as unique and beautiful as you are.

So that's a bit about me, and I look forward to sharing more and hearing from you more here or on social media. Until then, keep being your unique self.
