Interiors: Globally Influenced
This month, Lonny Magazine takes us inside the Harlem apartment of Nicki Clendening, a designer who mixes art, antiques, and global pieces with an enviable ease. Her secret: "…Create a neutral backdrop so that rugs, art, and furnishings don’t compete." In the living room, Nicki painted the apartment walls black and opted for a linen-upholstered sofa to help ground the space.
India meets Morocco in the apartment’s main living area. An Indian brass table tray sits alongside a chair with a Moroccan wedding blanket (above). In the dining space (below), Indian ram’s head chairs are paired with a Moroccan light fixture.
The bedroom is the epitome of serenity with an 18th-century hand-painted Italian headboard and linens from Horchow. A painting of the Eiffel Tower hangs above a bedside table, just one of over 60 pieces in Nicki’s collection. Her love of art is evident throughout the space. She notes, "A house without art is a bit soulless."
The bathroom is easily my favorite in the entire apartment. The audacious, marble walls bring interest to an otherwise drab space. No expensive wallpaper here. Rather, Nicki used craft paper from a local art supply store. Love it!
